Principal's Opening Message
The year 1940
Clyde W. White, the first
principal at Abraham Lincoln High School, gave greetings to and set the tone
for the pioneer students in an article published in the first edition of the
Lincoln Log on September 20, 1940. His greetings to the students were
as follows: A fine new building with
an enthusiastic group of pupils marked our "Grand Opening." You who are the
pioneers have many reasons to be happy for you seem to welcome that challenge
to institute traditions that eventually should distinguish your school. As
the term becomes older, doubtless there will be presented to you the countless
opportunities to show whether you really can bear responsibilities that are
yours. It is not for this term alone that we are building, nor for next term
either, but for the years and years that are to come. How well you rise to
the present needs will be reflected in the experiences of those who are here
many years from now. Your principal hopes that
you prove yourselves worthy and capable. We bear the name of a most honored
American. May we weave into our lives those fine ideals for which he stood,
and may we, yes, we every one of us, seek to emulate him in deed and in word.
His was a noble life whose very energy was unselfishly expended in the cause
and interest of those about him.
