Rousing success for F50/S51 Reunion |
"Not a front page story? If you had been there you would think differently. The intensity and dedication committee members invest in any reunion is seldom recognized, but the members of your Executive Board who attended this Spring '51 reunion were duly impressed by the results.
Mother Nature was helpful by providing a beautiful November evening surrounding the City by the Bay, especially in the area of the San Mateo Marriott Hotel.
The evening started at the check-in table where classmates could pick up name badges (with year book picture attatched) made by committee chairperson Mildred (Glover) Simmons, S51, and also buy raffle tickets for two bottles of Kendall-Jackson wine (six winners) and a chance at winning one of the beautiful, ornately decorated centerpieces painstakingly constructed by Ardeth (Reynolds) Larson, S51.
Classmates mingled in the antechamber while sipping liquid refreshments and nibbling on the centrally located platters of hors d'oeuvres, talking and reminiscing while squeals of delight erupted from excited alumni. Dinner was accompanied by the music of Abe Battat, S51 and his orchestra playing music of the '40's and'50's era.
Alumni were pleasantly surprised to fnd everybody's favorite teachers. Marjorie Maher and Barbara Avery, attending the function, and a steady stream of former students paid their respects and passed the time with the beloved educators.
Committee members were Mildred (Glover) Simmons, Shirley (Bole) Sinclair, Sally (Breen) Hughes, Margaret (Clifton) Caldow, Beverly (Copeland) Beck, Barbara (Kelley) Citerley, Carol (Larsen) Hamilton, Diann (McEntee) Murphy, Ardeth (Reynolds) Larson, Marvin Steinberg, Patricia (Waddell) U'Ren, and Rhoda (Wiley) Manson.
We cannot say enough about these very able committee members who donated the proceeds of the raffle, almost $1,000, to the Alumn Association Scholarship Fund, then kicked in an additional $1,400 collected from their classmates. They also graciously invited your association President Bill (Rocky) Mason S44, Board member Judy Banks S63, and your Editor to enjoy the fine cuisine served by the Marriott Hotel.
Three members of the class traveled great distances to be with their classmates, two from Portugal and one from France. We are proud that Mustangs thinks so much of their classmates.
Although most of the committee members are located in California, Mildred spearheaded this great reunion from Colorado. Writes Mildred Glover of her experience: "WOW...50 years had passed, but you would never have known it from the spirited group that gathered at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the classes of 1951. From the start of the reception hour, until midnight, all you could see were smiles and happy faces of classmates reunited after so many years. A large percentage of the attendees had not seen each other since graduation. This was also a group that trveled from far and wide to attend the reunion: Bob Illing and Nadine Napolitano Scott coming from Portugal, Nancy (Novotny) and Dennis Atkinson from Paris, France and class members from Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Indiana, New Jersey, New York and of course, from all over the State of California.
When the attendees were not renewing friendships, they were dancing to the nostalgic music of Abe Battt and his Orchestra.
This was a unforgetable evening with memories that will linger for years to come. The Spring '51 class has tentative plans to "re-group" for another reunion in the spring of 2003.
