Hal Fox

Outstanding Athlete, Teacher, Coach, and Administrator

Fall 1944 Graduate

        A member of Lincoln's first full four year graduating class, Hal was an outstanding athlete at Lincoln being selected most valuable player for the 130# classification. Following graduation from Lincoln (with honors), Hal attended San Francisco State College (now University), being awarded a BS in 1948, an MA in School Administration in 1951 and a general Administration Credential in 1953. At State, he was student body secretary, lettered in four sports (track, football, baseball, and soccer). On State's 1947 track team which was the Far Western Conference Champion. Hal ran the 100' the 200 and was on the mile relay team. While at State, he set a school record when he ran the 100-yd dash in 9.5 seconds, a record that stands today after more than 50 years.

        Following State, he entered the teaching profession, first in physical education and special education at Roosevelt Junior High, then he went onto Washington High School, James Lick Jr. high School, eventually becoming Physical Education Department Chair at Luther Burbank Junior High School from 1954 to 1963. In 1963 Hal was appointed Supervisor of Physical Education for all San Francisco Schools. He served the San Francisco Unified School District administering sports and physical education until 1978 when he was appointed principal of Luther Burbank Middle School where he served until his retirement in 1986.

        Following retirement, Hal was Director of Sports for the World Corporate Games, Chief Proctor for the Department of Consumer Affairs and statistician for the Golden State Warriors, the latter being a position he enjoys to this day. Since 1990, Hal has served on the Executive Board of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Hal belongs to many fraternal and charitable organizations including the Elk's Lodge of San Mateo, the Masonic Lodge, Baseball Old Timer's of San Francisco, Old Time Athlete's Association and the Godfathers.

        Hal's many accomplishments have accorded him numerous honors. In 1991, he was inducted into the San Francisco State College Athletic Hall of Fame and in 1997, he was named the San Francisco Old Timer's Baseball Association's Man of the Year.

        In recognition of his many accomplishments, Hal was inducted into the Abraham Lincoln High School Wall of Fame in May 1999.
