Paul Marshall

Documentary Film Maker

Fall 1954 Graduate

While at Lincoln, Paul thrilled his fellow students playing jazz with Larry Vukovich and Bob Steele. Following Lincoln, he attended San Francisco State College, receiving his BA. in Broadcasting in 1958. Following graduation he entered television production as a Floor Director at KTVU-TV in Oakland. As an Artist/Director at KVIE-TV, Sacramento's PBS affiliate, Graphic Photographer for KGO-TV and Art Director for KOVR-TV in Sacramento before moving to San Diego to become a Producer/Director for KPBS-TV, San Diego's PBS affiliate in 1967.

During his 26 year tenure at KPBS, he began producing and directing a remarkable string of award winning documentaries, far too many to be recounted here. In 1970, he directed PBS's Science & Society, a four part series focusing on Jonas Salk, Jacob /Bronowski, Harold Urey and Carl Rogers. Paul's 1975 Cities For People, received the Golden Gate Award at the l1965 San Francisco Film Festival. His 1983 Three Generations of the Blues, shown on PBS, garnered the Bronze Medal at the 1983 New York International Film and Video Festival. Jacob Bronowski: Life and Legacy, which Paul produced and directed in 1984, was honored at the American Film and Video Festival in New York and shown on BBC following Bronowski's own Ascent of Man series.

But it is in music documentaries that he has excelled, a homage to his love for jazz fostered at Lincoln. His most remarkable effort was PB'Ss 1988 Club Date, 38 half hour programs showcasing the greatest jazz recording and concert artists, including Anita O'Day, Kenny Burrell, Mose Allison, Joe Pass and Larry Vuckovich. Club Date as well as Paul's seven other jazz programs were recently acquired by the Music Division of the Library of Congress and have been added to our nation's National Jazz Archives.

In spite of this prodigious output, Paul found time to achieve an MA in telecommunications and film from San Diego State University in 1971. In 1993, Paul left KPBS, to start his own independent company, Crown Point Media, located in San Diego.

In recognition of his many accomplishments, Paul was inducted into the Abraham Lincoln High School Wall of Fame in May 1997.
